MOT Testing — Vans & HGVs
DVSA-certified MOT testing for vans and HGVs in Yeovil — Class 4, Class 7, and annual HGV tests with same-day rectification available.
HFG Commercials operates a DVSA-authorised MOT test station in Yeovil, covering the full range of commercial vehicles — from small panel vans through to large panel vans and HGVs. Whether your vehicle requires a Class 4, Class 7, or annual HGV test, we have the facilities, equipment, and qualified examiners on-site to carry it out.
Van MOTs — Class 4 and Class 7
MOT requirements for vans depend on the vehicle’s design gross weight (DGW):
- Class 4 — vans and goods vehicles up to 3,000 kg DGW. This covers most smaller vans and car-derived vans.
- Class 7 — goods vehicles between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg DGW. This covers larger panel vans such as the MAN TGE, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, Volkswagen Crafter, and Iveco Daily.
Large panel vans fall under Class 7 — and this is an important distinction. Most standard MOT test stations equipped for cars are Class 4 facilities only. A Class 7 bay must be at least 14 metres long, 3.5 metres wide, and 4.8 metres high, with a roller brake tester rated for vehicles up to 3,500 kg. Many car-focused garages simply do not have the space or equipment to test a large panel van. If you’ve ever turned up to a car garage with a Transit or Sprinter and been turned away, this is why.
At HFG Commercials, our Yeovil facility is equipped to test Class 4 and Class 7 vans on-site — no need to hunt for a specialist test station that can actually accommodate your vehicle.
HGV MOT Testing — Annual Test
All HGVs over 3,500 kg require an annual DVSA test — this is a legal requirement, and no HGV can operate on UK roads without a valid test certificate. Our test station is DVSA-authorised and equipped for the full annual test, covering brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, emissions, cab structure, and more.
From April 2025, the DVSA mandates a minimum of four laden roller brake tests per year for HGVs operating under an operator’s licence. Our station meets these requirements, providing a convenient local facility to keep your fleet compliant without unnecessary travel.
What the MOT Examines
Across all vehicle classes, the test covers the key safety and roadworthiness items:
- Brakes — brake performance and condition, roller brake test across all axles
- Steering & suspension — play, wear, and condition of all steering and suspension components
- Tyres — tread depth, condition, correct fitting, and matching types per axle
- Lights — all lights, indicators, hazards, and reflectors functioning and correctly aligned
- Emissions — exhaust emissions, AdBlue level, and SCR system operation on applicable vehicles
- Body & structure — cab condition, doors, mirrors, windscreen, wipers, and visible body panels
Same-Day Rectification Available
If your vehicle fails its MOT, our workshop team can carry out rectification work immediately on-site. For fleet operators, this significantly reduces downtime — rather than arranging a separate repair appointment and return visit, we aim to get your vehicle retested the same day wherever possible.
